United We Stand

s American Jews, we need Israel and it certainly needs

us.

The Jewish state helps define who we are Jewishly.
It speaks to our 4,000-year-old history
and heritage. It gives context to our
deep interest in the Mideast and texture
to our unwavering commitment to
Torah. It also nurtures our sense of spir-
ituality.
The culture of being a Jew includes
an emotional bond to our homeland —
the epicenter of all that Judaism stands

Tishrei 21, 5761

Vol. CXVIII, No. 10

ow close did the Mideast come to cataclysm this
week? Having peered into the abyss, can both sides
find ways to avoid the long dark plunge into war?
The answer, crafted by President Bill
Clinton on behalf of the rest of the
world, was that Ehud Barak and Yasser
Arafat better give it their best shot over
the coming months. And the Israeli
prime minister and the Palestinian
Authority chairman grudgingly agreed
to try.

Our coverage of a sad week in which
the modest gains of Sharm el-Sheikh was the only bright
spot runs on pages 6-16. In editorials on page 43, we look at
the outcome of metro Detroit's solidarity rally for Israel and
share our view of one potential long-range consequence for
the American Jewish community. And on our Web site,
www.detrohjewishnews.com , we give you additional late-
breaking stories and resources for understanding the issues.
