Holocaust Plaque
Unveiled In Rome

ROME (JTA) — A stone plaque was
unveiled Monday honoring the mem-
ory of Rome's Jews, whom the Nazis
deported from the city on Oct. 16,
1943. Mayor Francesco Rutelli joined
about 50 Jews, including Holocaust
survivors, at the city's Tiburtina train
station, site of the deportations.

Czechs Honor
Composer Mahler

Prague/JTA — The Czech town of
Jihlava resounded with the music of
Jewish composer Gustav Mahler dur-
ing a three-day festival to celebrate the
140th anniversary of the birth of its
most famous son.
The festival, which included perform-
ances of Mahler's works and an interna-
tional conference, was the biggest cul-
tural event ever held in the industrial
town. The cultural attache of the Israeli
embassy was among the guests.

Farrakhan Targets

leader Louis Farrakhan repeated his
charge that Democratic vice-presidential
candidate Joseph Lieberman is more
faithful to Israel than the United States.
Farrakhan, who summoned support-

Press that Jews control black artists.

Remembrance Tree
Disappears

Washington/JTA — U.S. officials are
investigating the disappearance of a
tree that had been planted in front of
the Agriculture Department's head-
quarters in Washington to commemo-
rate Holocaust victims.
Planted in the spring, the tree was
uprooted earlier this month, a
spokesman for the Agriculture
Department said. A plaque that had
been placed in front of the tree was
not disturbed.
