He is the son of Shellie and Steven Achtman and the brother of Brandon, Ryan and Maxx. Excited grandparents are Sima and Jerry Parr and Esther Achtman. He is also the grandson of the late Jack Achtman. Shawn's mitzvah projects include working at Yad Eira and being a camp counselor last summer at Beth Ahm. Shawn is an honor student at Walled Lake Middle School, where he plays trumpet and is on the basketball team. Stephanie Renee Hollander celebrated her bat mitzvah on Saturday, Oct. 14, with the Workmen's Circle/Arbeter Ring. Friends and family joined Stephanie, her parents Toby and Dale Hollander and proud grandmother Bobby Hollander at the sim- cha. Stephanie is also the granddaughter of the late Samuel and Ella Hornung and Michael Hollander. Her program and celebration were held at Birmingham Temple in Farmington Hills. Participating in the program were shule students singing as a chorus to honor Stephanie, led by music teacher Esther Freeman and accompanied by pianist Rose Morgan. Arlene Frank, Michigan District chair, officiated; and Karen Siersma Rosenstein, field direc- tor, brought greetings from Workmen's Circle locally and nationally. Stephanie's bat mitzvah presentation was titled "The Friendly Society," telling the history of Workmen's Circle and her own experiences as a shule student. For her Yiddish component, she recited two poems of her choosing by Yiddish poet Abraham Reisen, "Household of Eight" and "The Last Street." Stephanie is an eighth-grade student at Birney Middle School in Southfield. She enjoys soccer, movies and music. Her mitzvah projects included land- scaping at a Jewish Association for Residential Care home on Mitzvah Day, volunteering for Yad Ezra and singing with her classmates at the Prentis and Teitel senior apartments in Oak Park and at other shule students' celebrations. Alex Galper Schechter will be called to the Torah as a bar mitzvah at Temple Israel on Friday, Oct. 20. He is the son of Marcie and Marc Schechter and brother of Erin. Excited are grand- parents Adele and Raymond Galper, Linda and Jack Schechter, Betty and Stan Wolfe and great-grandmother Norma Galper. Alex enjoyed volunteering for the Humane Society as part of his mitz- vah projects. Attending Bloomfield Hills Middle School, where he is an honor student, Alex likes soccer, snowboarding, windsurfing, foren- sics and attending Camp Tamakwa. Samantha Jo Wax will celebrate her bat mitzvah on Saturday, Oct. 21, at Temple Shir Shalom. She is the daughter of Fay and Barry Wax and sister of Jessica. Proud grandmother is Mrs. Lubena Wax. She is also the granddaughter of the late Dr. Harry Wax and the late Philip and Lenora Silberman. Sammy is an honor student at Abbott Middle School in West Bloomfield. Her interests are gymnas- tics, art and being with her friends. Her mitzvah project included helping with the Yad Ezra food drive. Jaclyn Beth Winkelman will be called to the Torah as a bat mitzvah on Saturday, Oct. 21. She is the daughter of Linda and Roger Winkelman of Bloomfield Hills and the sister of Julie. Jaclyn's proud grandmothers are Irene Schwartz and Margaret Winkelman. Her late grandfathers are Marius M. Schwartz and Stanley J. Winkelman. Jaclyn attends Detroit Country Day School in Beverly Hills. She plays flute in the school band and enjoys reading, writing, art and swimming. As part of her mitzvah project, she volunteered as a student aide at Temple Beth El's religious school every Sunday last year. Additionally, she participated in a special community-service project sponsored by Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard.
