Candidates
Stand By Israel

St. Louis/JTA — Both Vice President
Al Gore and Texas Gov. George W.
Bush reiterated their support for Israel
at the third and final presidential
debate at George Washington
University.
But most of the questions in
Tuesday night's town hall forum
focused on domestic issues, as the can-
didates squared off on health care, gun
control and education.

I GUITAR INNOVATIONS

10/20
2000

Bloomfield Township — The presi-
dent of Detroit Jewry's public affairs
voice issued a statement Wednesday
commending President Bill Clinton
and Secretary of State Madeleine
Albright for their work at Sharm el-
Sheikh, Egypt.
"Their hard work, resulting in the
cease-fire agreement, is appreciated by
those praying for an end to the recent
violence and for a peaceful resolution
to the conflict," wrote Kathleen Straus,
president of the Jewish Community
Council of Metropolitan Detroit.
She added:
"The only gains made in the past
two weeks were by the enemies of
peace. With the Sharm el-Sheikh
agreement, people seeking peace must
now take the upper hand, and begin
again to build partnership and trust,
to heal the wounds, both physical and
psychological.
"It will not be easy. In the spiraling
violence, peace partners became adver-
saries, losing faith in each other.
Incitement to hatred and violence, and
lawlessness, must be eliminated. There
is much work to be done.
"The Jewish community continues
to believe that a negotiated diplomatic
agreement, recognizing both Israel's
security needs and the aspirations of
the Palestinians, remains the only path
to peace."

Notre Dame Gains
Jewish Studies Chair

South Bend — A Jewish Indiana
business executive has given $1 mil-
lion to the University of Notre Dame
to establish an endowed professor-
ship in Jewish studies.
Jordan H. Kapson is chairman of
the Jordan Automotive Group of
Mishawaka, Ind.
"As one of the world's foremost
Catholic universities, Notre Dame
has a special vocation to promote
dialogue and scholarly community
among Jews and Christians," said the
Rev. Edward A. Malloy, university
president.
"Jordan Kapson's visionary generos-
ity greatly strengthens our ability to
welcome and assist scholars from dif-
ferent traditions who share our
monotheistic faith."
The first holder of the Jordan
Kapson Chair in Jewish Studies is
Hindy Najman, assistant professor of
theology, who came to the university
in 1998. She is a graduate of both
Yeshiva University and Harvard
University.
Kapson founded the Jordan
