Last Rites?

ongregation Shaarey Zedek was the site of one
unlikely guest this past Kol Nidrei eve.
A few weeks before Yom Kippur, Jules Stross,
a 91-year-old resident at the Heatherwood, an
assisted-living facility in Southfield, was overheard to say
he would need a ride to services.
"I had trouble all week trying to find a ride," says
Stross.
"When I heard about it, I told him, 'Consider that
taken care of. I will drive you and pick you up,"' says
Roman Catholic Deacon Dan
Sweeney.
"I know Yom Kippur is the high-
est of the Holy Days," says the dea-
con, who provides pastoral and spiri-
tual care for residents of various
faiths through Prime Care Services, a
home-health agency in Bingham
Farms.
Driving Stross was "not in my job
description," Deacon Sweeney says.
Julius Stross
"But it is in my description of being
his friend.
"Mr. Stross and I have breakfast together once a month
at Heatherwood's men's breakfast group. We have gone to
dinner and other things occasionally, too."
One of those "other things" is to occasionally attend
Shabbat services at Shaarey Zedek.
"On Yom Kippur, he brought a yarmulke to me, but I
told him I didn't want to take up a seat," Deacon
Sweeney says. He left the synagogue and returned at a
designated time.
"When he came to pick me up, he told me when he
pulled into the synagogue he was following two emer-
gency vehicles that parked in front of the entrance,"
Stross says. "He parked right next to them."
Arriving early, the deacon waited for Stross to come
out of services. "I got out of my car, and was standing on
the sidewalk, in my Roman collar and black suit, looking
very obviously like a Christian," Deacon Sweeney says.
"A woman came over to me. She looked at the ambu-
lances and she looked at me." Then he recalls her perplex-
ity, when she asked him, "Who called you here?" ❑

Can you connect these terms with Jewish meanings?
