Forum Focus:
School Vouchers

The Jewish Community Center in
West Bloomfield is hosting a commu-
nity-wide forum sponsored by a
statewide coalition of Jewish groups
opposed to Proposal 1, the state
voucher issue.
The forum, "About Vouchers and
Our Jewish Community: Myths and
Facts," takes place at 7:30 p.m.
Monday, Oct. 23, at the West
Bloomfield JCC, Maple and Drake.
Panelists include David Gad-Harf,
West Bloomfield school board mem-
ber and Jewish Community Council
of Metropolitan Detroit executive
director; Wendy Wagenheim, Jewish
community activist and American
Civil Liberties Union legislative direc-
tor; Dr. Mark Smiley, Hillel Day
School of Metropolitan Detroit head-
master; and Shirley Stancato, New
Detroit Inc. president.
The panel will outline reasons why
Jewish voters should not support
vouchers. Dr. Seymour Gretchko,
West Bloomfield Schools superinten-
dent, will give the keynote address.
The program is sponsored by the
Jewish Coalition Against Vouchers and
affiliated with All Kids First!, a coali-
tion fighting the Michigan voucher
movement. The JCC also is sponsor-
ing the free public event.

Shaliach Speaks
About Israel

Mark Myers, community shaliach
(emissary) and director of the
Michigan/Israel Connection, will
share his insights on "Israel Today"
with area seniors at 12:30 p.m.
Thursday; Oct. 26, at Adat Shalom
Synagogue.
Myers graduated with a degree in
international relations from Pomona
College and found work at the
Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, work-
ing with Soviet Jewish immigrants. He
moved to Israel in 1980, living on a
kibbutz for 19 years and working as a
high school teacher of Jewish and gen-
eral history,. He came to Detroit in
1999 to serve as shaliach, a link
between our community and the State
of Israel.
