Snyder Clifford Sobel Sandra Stein Arnold Thaler DEAR MR. VICE PRESIDENT: As you well know, Minister Farrakhan is an unrepentant promoter of hatred, bigotry, and anti-Semitism. He has called Judaism a "dirty religion" and said that Catholicism "has been by white people, for white people to subject black people to a white kind of theology that strips us of ourselves." His lieutenant, Khalid Muhammad, called the Pope an "anti-Christ" and a "cracker." Over the years, Farrakhan and his aides have spewed out, in speeches and writings, some of the most racist and hateful rhetoric of the last two decades. That's why we, and many others in the Jewish community, including the ADL and the American Jewish Congress, issued public statements expressing disappointment regarding Senator Joe Lieberman's comments that he has "respect" for Minister Farrakhan and that he would like to meet with him. We feel that Senator Lieberman should not, as the ADL said, "grant unmerited legitimacy" to Minister Farrakhan. You have said in the past (February 1994) that "We should not tolerate any anti-Semitic statements by people like Louis Farrakhan." Is this still your view? If so, how can you tolerate Senator Lieberman meeting with Louis Farrakhan? While we differ with you on many issues, we must agree that anti-Semitism and racial and religious intolerance have no place in American life. We urge you to use your position of power as Vice President to denounce hatred and those who seek to spread it. Please ask Senator Lieberman not to meet with Minister Farrakhan. THE ADL HAS TOLD • SENATOR LIEBERMAN THAT IF HE WERE TO MEET WITH LOUIS FARRAKHAN, HE WOULD BE LEGITIMIZING A BIGOT, AN ANTI-SEMITE AND A RACIST, WHO CONTINUES TO SPOUT HIS MESSAGE OF HATE.
