Church, State And
Vouchers Tracked

Rabbi Aaron Bergman will lead a dis-
cussion on "Kabbalah: A Way Into
Jewish Mysticism and Spirituality" at
the Food for Thought program 7-9
p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, at
Congregation B'nai Moshe.
The program is sponsored by the
Women's Campaign and Education
Department of the Jewish Federation
of Metropolitan Detroit. Bergman is
the director of Jewish studies at the
Jewish Academy of Metropolitan
Detroit.
Sherry Haffner will chair the event;
Abbe Sherbin is associate chair.
Cost for the program and dessert is
$15. Registration deadline is Nov. 10.
There will be no solicitation of gifts at

In conjunction with Clergy and
Citizens United, the Birmingham
Temple Social Action Committee will
present Garry Wills, journalist and
Catholic intellectual, at a rally to
defend the separation of religion and
government 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct.
17, at the temple.
Wills will speak on "Vouchers: The
Subversion of Religious Freedom."
Event organizers say he believes that
public funding of parochial schools will
lead to the resegregation of America.
The program is free and open to the
public.

New Director Joins
Common Ground

Common Ground Sanctuary, the non-
profit crisis-intervention agency head-
quartered in Bloomfield Hills, has
named Dr.
Howard Friedman
of Farmington
Hills as medical
director of its crisis
screening and cri-
sis residential units
in Pontiac.

with Oakland County Community
Mental Health Authority.
Friedman heads a team of psychia-
trists who provide mental-health
assessments, medication evaluations
and referrals for 2,5000 patients a
year.
Friedman maintained his own out-
patient psychiatric practice in
Birmingham since 1972. Most recent-
ly, he served as director of the inpa-
dent adult psychiatric unit of Henry
Ford Health Systems Kingswood
Hospital in Ferndale. Prior to that, he
was medical director of Havenwyck
Hospital in Auburn Hills.
Tony Rothschild is chief executive
officer of Common Ground, which
also operates a youth shelter in Royal
Oak.

The Jewish Women's Foundation of
Metropolitan Detroit will host its first
fall forum featuring finance expert Jean
Sherman Chatzky at noon Wednesday,
Nov. 1, at
Congregation
Shaarey Zedek.

Chatzky is the
Michigan-born
author of The

Rich and Famous

Money Book and the upcoming Talking
Money. She is financial editor for
MSNBC's homepage and a guest
speaker on personal finance on numer-
ous television programs, including the
Today show.
The Jewish Women's Foundation is
a program of the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit. An endowment
fund is being built up with a minimum
of $10,000 contributions, payable over
five years, dedicated to the foundation's
mission of addressing issues of concern
to Jewish women and girls.
The areas of interest include medical
research and treatment, the arts, educa-
don, economic self-sufficiency and per-
sonal well being. Programs designed to
benefit Jewish women and girls in these
areas will be eligible for funding from
the Jewish Women's Foundation.
Margot Halpern is the chair of the
foundation; Beverly Lis is associate
chair.
Cost of the forum is $36. For infor-
