An Open Letter
to the Jewish Community:

During this month when the Jewish people celebrate the New Year, we are reminded
of events 27 years ago when Israel was attacked by her Arab neighbors on Yom Kippur,
the holiest day of the Jewish calendar.

Today, as in 1973, the Israeli people have come under attack on their borders, in their
homes, on their roads and at their holy places.

Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America, with its more than 300,000
members, and Hadassah International, in 34 countries, condemn the violence that has
occurred over the past two weeks and urge the principals to express and resolve their
differences at the negotiating table. The pursuit of peace and the perpetuation of
violence cannot co-exist.

As we have for the past 90 years, the Hadassah family stands in solidarity with the
people of Israel in their efforts to forge a permanent peace with their neighbors. We call
on the American Jewish community to join Hadassah in supporting the State of Israel —
our democratic partner in the Middle East — in its pursuit of a secure and lasting peace.

Sincerely,

Bonnie Lipton
National President
