Southfield Police are continuing to
sift through leads and have a few
potential suspects in the case of a
Jewish woman who was brutally
beaten Sept. 13 at the Lexington of
Southfield Apartments on Franklin
Road.
Police continue to withhold the
name of the 55-year-old woman,
who uses a wheelchair. She remains
in a coma and in critical condition
at an undisclosed location. Police
continue to be concerned about her
safety.
The woman attends Young Israel
of Southfield, and is a student at
Michigan Jewish Institute in Oak
Park, where she studies computer
information systems.
The apartment complex con-
tributed $3,500 and Young Israel
$1,500 to a reward fund on behalf
of the woman.
Officer John Harris said Southfield
Police are hoping the fund will
encourage a witness to come for-
ward. There was no visible forced
entry at the woman's first-floor
apartment, and police speculate the
assailant was someone the woman
had seen before or knew.
Rabbi David Kagan of Michigan
Jewish institute said the victim is
well known in the Jewish communi-
ty, and many people contributed to
the reward fund.
"Many people know her because
she was a lady who had to get
around in a wheelchair," Dr. Kagan
said. "She was invited to many
places by community members, who
would pick her up and take her."
Dr. Kagan said the woman had
one more year of studies to complete
her degree at the 237-student school
on Coolidge Highway.
Officer Harris said police have
interviewed apartment residents, the
woman's family members as well as
the caregiver and apartment employ-
ee who opened her apartment and
found her lying on the floor.
Persons with information about
the incident should call Southfield
Police, (248) 354-4720.
