The child was placed in the back of the classroom.'
I oppose prayer in public schools. Religious institutions should work
on moral and spiritual wellbeing and stay our of politics.

Shulman: I support our First Amendment rights and the freedom of reli
gion that our country-'s forefathers, including [President] James Madison,
clearly articulated in their doctrine of the strict separation of church and
state. Our government should continue to adhere to this and not use tax
dollars to promote or fund religion.

: The booming economy has caused a shortage in direct-care staff in
Q
the health-care field. How would you propose solving the issue of

staffing in this crucial area of health care?

Fuller: We need to introduce legislation to expand the training require-
ments for nurses' aides and to increase medical funding to improve qual-
ity care.

Shulman: Our Long-term Care Task Force has also recognized the need
that, in order to keep well-trained staff, you must provide not only the
education necessary but also a rate of pay that will attract people to this
health-care field. In addition, we must look at providing additional
resources for respite care to allow children who are taking care of their
parents, or vice versa, some time off to do so.

: The growing body of senior citizens has transportation needs that
Q
social-service agencies have not been able to meet. What would you do

as a state representative to solve this situation?

Fuller: Transportation is a real problem in Oakland County. Our seniors
cannot depend on public transportation. We need to expand on public-
transportation routes in our area to make transportation more accessible
for our seniors. The state needs to provide funding for more accessible
busing to aid our seniors with their medical and other needs.

Shulman: It's essential that senior citizens have reliable transportation.
Whether this transportation comes from the public, family or an agency,
providing means for our seniors to get their groceries, shop, remain active
or visit their doctors is a responsibility we owe past generations. I am cur-
rently working with the Appropriations Committee to find solutions to
the many transportation challenges facing our older population.

BIOGRAPHIES

from page 20

"There have been many decisions coming down from Lansing that do
not reflect the needs of our seniors, the future of our children's education
and the lack of responsibility for our mentally ill," Fuller said. "Working
in these programs., I have witnessed firsthand some of the consequences of
these decisions.
"Our priorities should remain with the education of all children, along
with the health care for all Michigan seniors and children. Equally impor-
tant is the quality of our environment."
