see Anne before she went into hiding.
Eva, who went into hiding around the
same time, ended up in Auschwitz with
her mother, father and brother, but
only the women survived."
Nicole Raphael, a New York actress
portraying Anne, will participate in the
phone conversations and see a series of
pertinent films collected by the direc-
tor, but she already has done research
on her own, reading extensively about
the person she admires.
"I think Anne Frank is one of the
most important voices of the
Holocaust," says Raphael, who has
been cast in many kinds of produc-
tions, from Shakespearean comedies in
New York to Oliver Twist on tour. She
makes that time real because of her
intense feelings and gift for writing."
Raphael has read the diary many
times, starting when she was about the
author's age and finding the work at a
Jewish book fair in Florida, where she
grew up and celebrated her bar mitzvah
and confirmation.
Although Kerner has not worked
with any of the Michigan cast mem-
bers, she did choose them. Some had
auditions in New York, and others at
the theater. Their characterizations will
follow a new introduction developed by
Kerner to relate to recent incidents.
"I think it's very important to make
this story live for people today," says
Kerner, who approaches the production
as both a survival and coming-of-age
drama. "I find it an exciting piece
because it's based on truth and audiences
don't have to know a great deal about
the play's history to connect with it.
"I think what's beautifully illustrated
in the play is how hard these people
worked to get along with each other,
fight despair and keep busy. They
thought they were going to survive, and
they came very close. Anne was on the
last train sent to Auschwitz and died six
weeks before the war was over." ❑
