Three Generations Of Symes

Congregants at three different High Holiday services this year listened to the
words of members of the Syme family. While Rabbi M Robert Syrne, left, spoke
at the Yizkor (memorial) service at Temple Israel on Yom Kippur, his son Rabbi
Daniel Syme spoke in the sanctuary at Temple Beth El on both Rosh Hashanah
and Yom Kippur. On Rosh Hashanah, in Beth El's Handleman Hall, Rabbi
Daniel Symes son, Josh Syme, a 21-year-oldjunior at Wayne State University,
gave his first High Holiday sermon at the synagogue's non-member service.
In rehearsing his sermon for his father, Rabbi Daniel Syme says, "Josh spoke
about Jews being an extended fizmily." He connected the political issues of our
country and our foreign concerns in Israel with our personal relationships. He
spoke of his excitement at Senator Joe Lieberman nomination for vice-presi-
dent, with pride in another Jew. "He said because we Jews are more than just a
religion, when a Jew is embarrassed or honored, we feel ashamed or proud,"
Rabbi Syme says.
The photo was taken in the sanctuary of Temple Beth El.
