HERE FROM Sherman Oaks,
Calif., for a short visit, Sam Boris
recalls the days as a youngster on
Hastings Street ... when the Boesky
brothers of delicatessen and restau-
rant note, got their start in the din-
ing business ... A couple of them,
Sam doesn't recall which, sold frank-
furters from a pushcart.
Sam Boesky had Boesky's
Delicatessen on Hastings, and later
Darby's on Seven Mile Road; Harry
had Harry Boesky's on 12th Street,
with brother Abe working for him;
Sol owned Sid's Cafe on the Seaway;
Bill had the Brass Rail on Adams
and also on Woodward.
In 1936, recalls Sam Boris, while
driving in from Akron, Ohio, he
picked up a youngster who needed a
ride ... and a job .... Sam took him
to see Herman "Turk" Prujansky,
who put the boy to work at his
Turk's Show Bar in downtown
Detroit ... playing the piano and
singing ... The kid went on to
national fame as singer and movie
performer Johnny Ray ... His "Cry"
was the No. 1 record seller in the
nation.
OLDIE BUT GOODIE Dept. ...
From Harry Gealer ... "Rosh
Hashanah was over and there was
time until Yom Kippur. Joe needed
his tallit (prayer shawl) cleaned and
called his friend, Max, to ask what
dry cleaner to take it to.
"`I always take my 'tallis' to Moishe
the dry cleaner on Fourth Street,' said
Max. 'He only charges $4.'
"So Joe goes over to Moishe's and
finds that the ownership has
changed... He asks the new owner,
Mr. O'Brien, if he meets the old
prices. Mr. O'Brien assures him that
he does.
"Three days later, Joe goes to get
his 'tallis' and is given a bill for $24.
"He storms at Mr. O'Brien. 'I
thought you met Moishe's prices?'
"`I did,' said Mr. O'Brien. '$4 for
the prayer shawl — and $20 to get
all the knots out of the fringes." ❑
