"I absolutely will stay in Michigan," said
Aptekar said about his future. "I will

continue to do what I have been doing.
I will visit my children and sister in
Florida and brother in Arizona."
Aptekar wrote most of the arrange-
ments, both vocal and instrumental, for
his orchestra. And that love for compos-
ing music will continue — on the com-
puter.
Oak Park's Sam Barnett, a friend of
65 years, met Aptekar in Detroit at
Wayne State University. "Our families
have had a wonderful relationship all
these years, said Barnett, a klezmer
musician. "In fact, Milt and Anne fixed
up my wife and me. He is an excellent
musician."
"My father inspired all his children
with his commitment and love of
music," Lucy said. "In addition, he was
enthusiastic about being a teacher."
Reminiscing about playing summers
during the 1960s at Detroit's famous
London Chop House, Aptekar said,
"Across the street at the Caucus Club, a
woman just starting out in her career —
Barbra Streisand — was performing."
He considers the statement.
"Maybe I'll do a 'Barbra Streisand'
and perform another final show," he
said.
"If she can come out of retirement, so
can I. Anything is possible." ❑

Adat Shalom Synagogue.
The dinner co-chairs are Dr. Barbara
Kappy and Mrs. Agi Rubin. Honorary
committee co-chairs are Dr. Nathan
Kaufman and Dr. Kenneth Levin.
The honoree is Dr. Jeffrey D.
Forman, professor and chair of the
department of oncology at Wayne State
University and the Barbara Ann
Karmanos Cancer Institute. Dr. Forman
is highly regarded in the field of oncolo-
gy as a physician, professor, writer,
researcher and lecturer.
Tickets are $125 per person and avail-
able from ICA, 31731 Northwestern,
Suite #106, Farmington Hills, (248)
865-8323; fax (248) 737-1587.
The Michigan chapter of ICA has
raised funds for the last 20 years to help
Israel in its fight against cancer. The
funds have helped finance medical
equipment and cancer-fighting pro-
grams. The local chapter is now raising
funds to finance an anti-smoking pro-
gram aimed at children ages 5-7.

The Jewish Community Center's

home and then be off to a job at night,
yet he still found time to be helpful at
home. He is multitalented, creative,
hardworking and a perfectionist. They
don't make very many of those anymore.
He would be successful in anything he
wanted to do."
The Fenby-Carr Orchestra always
performed "like a well-tuned car," Lucy
fondly remembers.
"All members were very respectful of
each other and could anticipate the
other members' moves," she said. "They
appreciated each other's talents."
She said her father's sense of humor
shined while performing. The Fenby-
Carr Orchestra had a weekly television
show in Detroit from 1952-53. TV
audience members would request songs
and try to stump the band. Lucy said it
was a very funny show.
The Fenby-Carr Orchestra had many
opportunities to leave Detroit for a more
promising career, but the members were
committed to their families and teach-
ing. "Music is joyous and that is the life
they lived," Lucy said.
