Gripping
Drama of
Human
Courage

Inspired by the celebrated tales of fan-
tasy by E.T.A. Hoffman, the opera
transports audiences to a romantic
adventure about a tortured poet whose
obsession for three lost loves leads him
to drink. Its beloved melodies include
the famous "Barcarolle."
The singers are Jewish bass-baritone
Richard Bernstein; tenors Vinson Cole
and Antonio Nagore, alternating in
the role of Hoffman; Mark Doss;
Cassandra Riddle; mezzo-soprano
Carmella Jones and coloratura-soprano
Elizabeth Parcells.
Jewish director Bernard Uzan is at
the helm.

Spring Season

Sponsored by General Motors, the
spring season opens with the romantic
tragedy La Traviata ("the fallen
woman"), which centers on Violetta, a
courtesan dying of consumption, who
proves more virtuous than the polite
Parisian society that judges her. The
opera stars Giusy Devinu, Michael
Didyk and Christopher Robertson.
Although mainly a composer of
tragic opera, Verdi wrote the comedy
Falstaff, his final opera, at the age of
80, after a visit from a comic muse. It's
a musical tribute to Shakespeare's
scheming fat knight, played by John
Del Carlo. Also in the cast are Diana
Soviero, Mariana Karpatova, Massimo
Giordano and Nicole Heaston.
The spring season concludes with
MOT's first staging of The Tales of
Hoffman by Jacques Offenbach.
