JOSEPH SHAPIRO, 96, of Oak
Park, died Sept. 29. He was a
department store executive at A.A.
Department Store on Warren and
24th and before that at
Northwestern Department Store on
Grand River.
He is survived by his son and
daughter-in-law, Dr. Bernard and
Marcia Shapiro of Clarkston; grand-
children, Robert Shapiro, Dr. Larry
Shapiro, Helene Shapiro, Dr. Jeffrey
and Michelle Shapiro, Bruce and
Sharon Shapiro, Dr. Paul Shapiro
and fiance, Jennifer Grumet; great-
grandchildren, Rachel, Elyse, Sam,
Rikki, Randee and Alec Shapiro. For
72 years, Mr. Shapiro was the
beloved husband of the late Blanche
Shapiro; loving father of the late
Norman Shapiro; dear father-in-law
of the late Joan Shapiro.
Interment at Adat Shalom

MITCHELL SHERMAN, 53, of
West Bloomfield, died Sept. 30. For
28 years, he was a teacher at
Southfield Lathrup High School.
He is survived by his wife, Laurel
Sherman; daughters, Jessica and
Emily Sherman; parents, Reuben
and Dorothy Sherman of Southfield;
sisters and brother-in-law Loraine
Raymer of Dallas, Janice and Larry
List of West Bloomfield; brother and
sister-in-law, Gary Sherman and
Marlene Lafer of West Bloomfield;
father-in-law and mother-in-law,
Carl and Inez Sweet; sister-in-law
and brother-in-law, Joyce and
Michael Cantor.

Detroiter of Burlington, Ontario,
died Sept. 8. She was educated at
Cass Technical High School and the
Society of Arts and Crafts. In addi-
tion to studying at Cranbrook
Academy of Art, she was awarded
fellowships at the McDowell Colony,
Peterboro, N.H.; Skowhegan School
of Painting and Sculpture,
Skowhegan, Maine; the Yaddo
Foundation, Sarasota Springs, N.Y.;
and the Huntington-Hartford
Foundation, Pacific Palisades, Calif.
After working and teaching in
Detroit and New York, Ms. Wald
moved to Burlington, Ontario, in
