ennis Hayes, Menorah
House nursing home admin-
istrator, discovered one good
turn does lead to another
after a proposed staff-unification plan
led to improved resident care, then went
on to bring rewards for employees.
In hopes of qualifying for the State of
Michigan Quality Incentive Grant, the
staff of the 186-bed Southfield facility
devised and implemented a new pro-
gram.
"Menorah House proposed a plan
that would lead to an expanded and
improved-func-
tioning interdisci-
...
plinary team,"
Hayes said.
Staff members
from every
department, along la
with residents and -E
their families, par-
ticipated in a pro-
gram that would
offer a party-like
barbecue held
each week during
the warm-weather
months.
"It centered
around a fun-
filled exercise

would serve on a
co-equal basis,
breaking down
the traditional barriers
between supervisors
and subordinates,"
Hayes said. It was pro-
posed to "be a true
team effort."

was involved with the
barbecues at some

ing the summer, he said. Each week, dif-
ferent units participated, including
housekeepers, nurses, receptionist, social
workers, administrator, laundry staff,
maintenance and activities personnel.
Having them all involved, Hayes said,
was "truly bringing the team together in
the purest form of interdisciplinary
functioning."
To make the plan work, Hayes
added, the existing patio needed to be
expanded to accommodate everyone.
When the grant committee approved
the plan, funding was provided to hire a
contractor, and new concrete was
poured to create a patio surface, smooth
but for the carved Hebrew date of 5760.
