Rep.] Maxine Waters [of Los
Angeles] and other members of the
liberal establishment who run the
Democrat — and note that I do not
say Democratic — Parry."
Sage Eastman, press secretary for
the Michigan Republican Party, said
Lieberman was "a great choice for the
Democrats. Clearly, it helped Al Gore
shore up some of his credibility on
family issues, on morality and in
terms of integrity and decency in the
White House."
However, Eastman feels voters will
look "at the candidates who align
themselves most with their opinions,
rather than vote for a person just
because he's Jewish, or Protestant or
Catholic, or whatever."
For this reason, he said the state
campaign is not making any specific
appeal to Jewish voters.

Young Peoples' Vote

As a member of the Jewish Federation
of Metropolitan Detroit Board of
Governors, Scott Kaufman of
Birmingham declined to reveal his
choice for the top of the national
ticket.
He said the selection of Lieberman
as vice-presidential candidate would
not affect his vote.
"In general, though, there's a feel-
ing of pride — not that you should
vote for him because he's Jewish, but
because the best candidate was
Jewish," said Kaufman, who leads
Federation's Young Leadership
Cabinet.
Kaufman said he likes Lieberman
more than Vice President Gore. "I
think Lieberman is more of a states-
man than most politicians these days.
He stands for something," Kaufman
said. "Obviously, he has to pander a
little bit the next few months —
that's how things are run."
This is the first time Joshua Syme,
an undergraduate at Wayne State
University, will vote in a presidential
election. The son of Temple Beth El
Rabbi Daniel Syme and grandson of
Temple Israel Rabbi Emeritus M.
Robert Syme, Josh Syme said he had
been planning to vote the
Democratic ticket anyway "because I
don't like George W. Bush. But now
it seems like a moral responsibility to
vote for Al Gore, as a young Jew.
"With all the hardships our people
have gone through, to grow up in a
country where you can succeed no
matter what your religion is, means
the sky's the limit for our genera-
tion," he said. ❑
