Counting The Jewish Vote

A

s the awful fighting waxed and then waned on the
West Bank and in northern Israel this week,
American Jews could only wonder what it meant and
what they could do about it.
One answer is that they need to pay
even more attention to the U. S. presi-
dential race. The next American presi-
dent will face the tremendous challenge
of maintaining and, with luck, improv-
ing a peace process that truly makes
partners of the warring Israelis and
Palestinians.
Many of us may have stopped giving

belief that a Gore administration would
be more sympathetic to Jewish concerns
than would a Bush administration. But as our cover story
(beginning on page 6) explains, the opportunity for Jewish
political action and the impact it could have is enormous. In
accompanying stories, key figures from the Republican and
Democratic Jewish coalitions explain why they believe their
candidates deserve our votes. Finally, in an editorial on page
41, we explain whom we support and why.
The Mideast didn't rate a mention in Tuesday night's presi-
dential debate. But as our stories explain, the race is critical
for American Jews and for a Mideast that never again should
have to endure a Rosh Hashanah riot.

Or so it's commonly thought.
I don't deny the impact that these

There's a Jewish renaissance sweeping
America, and Detroit Jewry takes a back
seat to no community when it comes to
strengthening its Jewish identity. Nearly

Whether it's Jewish education, synagogue
renewal, ecumenism or a federated sup-
port system, the Detroit Jewish community sports a national
reputation for excellence.
Politics have drained the spirit of some Jewish communi-
ties. Apathy has caused others to stagnate. Locally, however,
we've repeatedly risen above the fray and fears to join hands
in pursuit of a better way of life Jewishly.
This Yom Kippur, border peace and religious pluralism
suddenly seem more distant than ever in Israel.
But here in Jewish Detroit — while confronting conse-
quential issues like student scholarships, senior needs, wider
inclusion and cross-stream unity — we can bask in the glow
of being secure as a "community."
