investments have a much higher rate
of return than Social Security.
That money will belong to us and
can be passed on to our kids. It's more
than a government promise, it's real
savings. Creating personal retirement
accounts will put those savings to work
in the economy, to everyone's benefit.
Another way to keep the economy
strong is to keep taxes low, giving
workers more of their own money to
spend, save and invest. Al Gore's
budget proposals will result in raising
taxes on most Americans, with his
much-vaunted tax cuts helping only
narrowly targeted groups.
Bush believes in returning our
money to us, using part of our surplus
(after funding Social Security and
Medicare) for across-the-board tax
cuts, eliminating the marriage tax
penalty and the death tax and easing
the tax burden on middle class and
lower income families.
During the Clinton-Gore adminis-
tration, Israel's situation has only got-
ten worse. Israel gives the Palestinian
land, the U.S. gives them $100 mil-
lion, and still they have not fulfilled
their obligations. Now even Jerusalem
is on the table.

Bush casually dismisses it as unnecessary
because "all crime is hate crime."
Democrats want to include crimes
based on gender, disability or sexual
orientation. Bush dismisses that as "spe-
cial treatment."
Gore and Lieberman want to
strengthen measures aimed at keeping
guns out of the hands of children,
including mandatory child-safety locks,
full background checks, gun-safety
tests, banning all assault weapons and
closing the gun-show loophole.
By contrast, Cheney was one of only
21 congressmen in 1985 to vote against
bans on "cop-killer" bullets and plastic
guns that could slip through airport
security machines undetected.

Supreme Court

One of the most important legacies
that lasts long beyond any president's
term is the stamp he puts on our judi-
ciary, particularly the Supreme Court,
which today is so narrowly divided.
That close margin is especially impor-
tant this year because several present
justices are expected to retire during the
next president's tenure.

Jerusalem Reversal

This administration's ambassador to
Israel said that Jerusalem will have to
be shared. In spite of the 1995 law
mandating that the U.S. embassy be
moved to Jerusalem, the administra-
tion refuses to move it. Sen. Joe
Lieberman, who sharply criticized
this policy in the past, is suddenly
against moving the embassy, too.
Gore and Lieberman have vowed
to continue the Clinton administra-
tion's policies toward Israel. Bush,
who has visited Israel, met with
Israeli leaders, and seen Israel's
strategic needs first-hand, is commit-
ted to Israel's security first. He will
make sure that Israel's enemies know
the U.S. stands behind its No. 1 ally,
Israel.
When it comes to tachlis, actions
speak louder than words. Bush's plans
are real-life, practical proposals that
will get the job done without big gov-
ernment red-tape and higher taxes.
Choice, accountability, compassion
and results are the watch-words of
Bush's program. On those issues that
really matter, they are exactly what we
need.

Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas
or another Ruth Bader Ginsburg and
John Paul Stevens on the Supreme
Court?
But for the Jewish community, per-
haps the most important aspect of this
election is the historic nomination of
one of our own to a national ticket and
the courage of the man who chose him.
This momentous first is a source of
great pride — or nachas
but it is
much more than that. As the party that
nominated the first disabled person to
the presidency, as well as the first
Catholic, the first Greek Orthodox can-
didate, the first woman and now the
first Jew, Demo'crats are practicing the
politics of inclusion and demonstrating
that diversity extends beyond a stage in
Philadelphia and means more than two
white guys from different Texas oil
companies.
Diversity also means the breadth of
issues on our agenda, and in this
regard, the American Jewish communi-
ty is quite diverse. But on every issue of
importance to the Jewish community,
when it comes to comparing the
Bush/Cheney ticket to the
Gore/Lieberman ticket, well ... there is
no comparison.
