Temple Emanu-El has been awarded
partner program status by the Detroit
300 Committee, which is responsible
for planning and approving all events
that will play an official role in the cele-
bration of the city of Detroit's 300th
birthday in 2001.
A series of programs called Detroit
Jewish Perspectives and planned by the
Temple Emanu-El Adult Education
Committee will be recognized as offi-
cial events of the celebration.
Scheduled events include:
• Saturday, Jan. 20: Shabbaton panel
discussion about Detroit in the 1920s-
'30s, the auto industry and Detroit
Jews. Moderator will be Wayne State
University Prof. Fred Pearson, a temple
member. Panelists will be Michigan
State University Prof. Ken Waltzer,
University of Michigan-Dearborn Prof.
Sid Bolkosky and Judy Cantor, past
president of the Jewish Historical
Society. Lunch is optional.
• Sunday, March 4: Bus tour of
Jewish Detroit with Adele Staller, a
JHS docent.
• Friday-Sunday, March 23-25:
Samuel Hamburger Scholar in
Residence Weekend with Tel Aviv
University Prof. Robert Rockaway. The
former Detroiter will discuss early
Jewish history in Detroit, Jewish gang-
sters and the Purple Gang.
All events and lectures are open to
the public. There is a nominal fee for
the bus tour and the optional luncheon
prior to the Shabbaton in January.
