Marks 10
Years

More than 40 alumni will cel-
ebrate the 10th anniversary of
Project STaR, the Jewish com-
munal certificate program at
the University of Michigan at
the first Alumni Institute in
Ann Arbor on Oct. 29-30.
The celebration includes a
Sunday evening reception at
the Jewish Community
Center in West Bloomfield to
honor STaR graduates, corn-
munity professionals who con-
tributed to their development
and program donors. The
reception also will serve as a
tribute to the upcoming
December retirement of STaR
founder and director Armand
Lauffer.
Speakers are scheduled to
include Lee Bollinger, U-M
president; Paula Allen-Meares,
School of Social Work dean;
Robert Aronson, Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit CEO; and Larry
Moses, Alumni Institute
scholar-in-residence and
keynote speaker.
STaR was founded 10 years
ago with grants and support
from the Wexner and Max
Fisher Community
Foundations. The Alumni
Institute has received a two-
year grant, which will under-
write the travel, housing, and
meal expenses for all STaR
alumni.
Project STaR stands for
Service, Training and Research
in Jewish communal develop-
ment. It prepares students for
leadership careers in the
Jewish community through
the School of Social Work, in
collaboration with the univer-
sity's Frankel Center for Judaic
Studies. Students earn a mas-
ter of social work degree in
and a certificate in Jewish
communal service and Judaic
