inventory is kept on thousands of
inventory cards in a file in their tiny
office, and in their heads.
And how is business? "Not as good
as it used to be," admits Mel. "The
auto-parts pie is only so big. And the
big chains — Murray's and Auto
Zone and Pep Boys — are taking big-
ger and bigger slices of the pie. Most
of the independents like us have gone
out of business."
And it's hard to compete on price.
The brothers buy from a warehouse, a
middleman. The big chains buy
direct from the manufacturers. No
middleman.

"And then there's another prob-
lem," Mel says. "Who do we sell to?
We used to sell to 20 gas stations. But
now gas stations don't do car repairs
anymore. They sell bread and milk."
So most of their customers are "back-
yard mechanics," guys who want to
save a few bucks by doing their own
repairs. The brothers just wish they
had more of them.
For 71 years, General Auto Parts
has been a Pontiac institution, but
Bernie and Mel Toby wonder about
its future. Maybe it's time for a little
creative expansion, like into muskrat
pelts, or cock fights. 1111
