Museum Rejects
Book-Signing

Washington/JTA — the U.S. Holocaust
Memorial Museum in Washington
refused to sponsor a book-signing for an
Atlanta man whose memoir includes the
story of an uncle who said the Nazis
forced him to make soap from victims at
Auschwitz.
Museum officials said a senior histori-
an read Ben Hirsch's Hearing a Different
Drummer and questioned the accuracy
of the soap-making passages. Most
Holocaust scholars dismiss as a myth the
belief that the Nazis made soap from the
bodies of Jews.

Jerusalem/JTA — No breakthroughs
were reported during a meeting this
week between Ehud Barak and Yasser
Arafat at the Israeli premier's home in
central Israel.
President Clinton telephoned during
the meeting to urge the two leaders to
advance the stalemated talks. Barak
has said he still wants a comprehensive
settlement, but is reportedly willing to
postpone discussion of control over
the Old City of Jerusalem and the
Temple Mount.
The United States decided for now
not to present proposals aimed at break-
ing the stalemated talks, according to the
Israeli daily Hdaretz. U.S. officials
reached the decision after identifying
"disparities on almost every subject" now
being discussed by the two sides.

Likud Plans
Spark Anger

Jerusalem/JTA — Palestinians are react-
ing angrily to reports that Ariel Sharon,
head of Israel's opposition Likud Party,
intends to visit the Temple Mount.
The Palestinians described the
planned visit as a provocation.
Meanwhile, a Knesset committee
approved a bill that bans any Israeli terri-
torial concessions in Jerusalem.
In another development, Sharon
appealed to American Jews to take a
stand on Jerusalem and help it remain
the "undivided" capital of Israel.
"Jerusalem is yours not any less than it
is ours," he told a meeting of the
Conference of Presidents of Major
American Jewish Organizations in New
York.
