"Look at all the elections when
Democrats were perceived as having the
counter-culture candidates — orthodox
liberals like [George] McGovern,
[Hubert] Humphrey, [IX/alter]
Mondale. Only Jimmy Carter and Bill
Clinton — both Southern Democrats
with knowledge of Scripture — were
successful running for president."
Roberts declined to identify his own
political loyalties, but offered more
insight: "One of the most effective
ways politicians win is by stealing their
opponent's best issues."
For example, he cited the
Republicans rather than the Democrats
talking about Social Security ,.
Roberts didn't make any predictions
about the presidential election but
pointed out what Texas Gov. George
W. Bush had done at the Republican
Convention.
"Governor Bush pulled a three-fer!"
he exclaimed. "He selected an African-
American female teacher to introduce
him!"
Roberts is currently the Shapiro
Professor of Media and Public Affairs
for George Washington University in
Washington, D.C., where he has
taught for 10 years. In that capacity,
he said he is frequently questioned
about truth and sensationalism in the
press, and campaign reform.
"I believe-it is our job as responsible
journalists to give you truthful, impor-
tant information so you can make
intelligent decisions and choices," he
said. "And, even though this is not
always a popular view, if it means pub-
lishing unpleasant facts about a candi-
date, so be it."
Lamenting the huge expense of
campaigns, Roberts does not predict
campaign reform will occur, because
the average voter does not give it pri-
ority in his or her life.
"Having to raise vast sums of money
takes time the candidate should be
using to work on issues for you, the
public," he said.
As for the female vote's importance
to candidates, Roberts was equally
emphatic: "Reproductive freedom is
not the biggest issue for women.
Health, education and welfare are. A
woman cares whether her mother-in-
law is going to be able to get her pre-
scription filled, or if her children are
safe on the street."
Roberts closed by praising the
NCJW members collectively.
"You represent the best of the Jewish
people with your values and commit-
ment to programming." D
