But appearing locally here on Sept. 19 for the National Council of Jewish Women, Steve Roberts proved his capability to captivate a crowd without the presence of his famous wife of 34 years. As keynote speaker for the Greater Detroit Section's opening meeting at Congregation Shaarey Zedek, Roberts shared his Steve Roberts political observa- tions with a NCJW record-setting audience of 400 mem- bers and guests. He also offered com- mentary on what he believes are the responsibilities of members of the media. Roberts quipped, "I think many people have formed a negative opinion of Washington because one of their first impressions was of the re-election of Mayor Marion Barry after he served his jail term. He is undoubtedly the only official to arrive at his inaugura- tion in a limousine with license plates he made himself." Turning serious, he launched into a monologue examining such issues as winning in politics and honesty in the press. "I'm asked all the time if the United States is ready for a Jewish vice presi- dent," he said. "My answer is an absolute, definite, unequivocal 'Yes!'
