Rosenbaum's organization found out
about the past of Nazi officer Kurt
Waldheim, who had gone on to become
president of Austria and the United
Nations secretary-general. The OSI also
helped find the remains of Josef
Mengele, the infamous doctor at the
Auschwitz German death camp, and
discovered that U.S. intelligence played
a part in helping Klaus Barbie, known
as the "Butcher of Lyon," to escape.
The OSI's caseload began to dwin-
dle until the Soviet Union collapsed,
when investigators were finally allowed
co search through Nazi archives. More
:han 70,000 names and birth dates
were found, then entered into a com-
puter database and sent to INS agents
around the country
"We get two calls a month from an
[NS officer at a border somewhere,"
Rosenbaum said. "It appears that New
York, Orlando and Miami are the most
Dopular destinations for Nazi criminals."
Once put in the OSI crosshairs, the
goal for all these aging defendants is to
;low the process down so they can die
n freedom, he said. The OSI has a

Currently, a case is being made
against Iwan Mandycz of Sterling
Heights in Federal District Court in

a forced-labor camp in November 1943.
"Time is racing along," Rosenbaum
