Brig. Gen. Beni Gantz and Rudy
Newman of the Friends of the IDF-
Michigan Chapter talk to a guest.

tion to members of the Friends of the
IDF, Michigan Chapter, on Sept. 22.
"You can ask me political questions
I just won't answer them," said
Gantz, who commanded the Lebanon
iaison Unit and headed the evacuation
of Israeli troops from Lebanon. He
compared the evacuation with what he
ill face in Judea and Samaria.
The troop withdrawal from Lebanon
as a strategic one, he said. "It was clear
to us that once the South Lebanon
my did not control the area, it
ouldn't be smart to stay there. We
ecided to withdraw immediately."
Although a slow and secure withdraw-
al of troops would have looked better on
television, the secure but fast option
chosen proved safer because there were
no casualties, said the general.
The region has been quiet so far, and
Gantz said he hopes it stays that way.
"Hezbollah understands we won't toler-
ate terrorism very well."
Judea and Samaria are not the same
story, he said, because there's no option
of leaving the area. Regardless of the
agreement, the 200,000 people who live
there will stay.
Gantz isn't as worried as Tayar about
those illegal weapons in the hands of
Arabs as he is about the presence of
heavy weapons.
"Once you find the first 100 illegal
weapons, you have a problem; any
additional are part of the same prob-
lem," he said. "Besides, they are lack-
ing ammunition."
The Jewish residents "should have the
right to live there securely," he said,
"but you have to watch how you use
your power."
If an agreement is signed, Gantz said
he forecasts another military crisis, "and
we must be ready for it."
Kibbutzim in the north
sive arms, but there are too many van-
ables for the IDF to plan anything, he
• "The
The size and place of a problem
will determine how they will cope with
it. Until it happens, we don't know
what to do."
