There's no question that Shanker is
good. He was St. Louis' first draft
choice out of college and he enjoyed
three strong years with the Ambush.
In 1998-99, he totaled 71 points in
35 games (one three-point goal, 25
two-pointers, a one-point shoot-out
goal and 17 assists). St. Louis reached
the NPSL finals twice, but fell short of
the title each time.
The Detroit Rockers acquired him
in 1999, but Shanker became a free
agent due to a contract impasse before
the season. He signed with
Philadelphia, but was traded back to
the Rockers in mid-season. Today,
Shanker is pleased to be in Detroit. "It
was good to be here after everything
was all said and done," he says.
Shanker was injured in his seventh
Rockers game last year, ending his sea-
son, but he says he was comfortable
with the team, which was 5-2 with
him in the lineup.
The Rockers made some personnel
changes in the off-season, but Shanker
believes his role will remain the same.
Coach Drago "is expecting me to
work real hard, be scrappy, help as a
playmaker, and score my share of the
goals.
"But there's going to be a lot of
new faces this year, who will help the
team. It's going to take a little adjust-
ment time at the beginning to get
used to each other."
In the off-season Shanker enjoys
working as an instructor at the
Rockers' soccer camps. "I love working
with kids," he says.
In St. Louis, Shanker ran his own
camps at the Jewish Community
Center, and worked with the JCC's
soccer programs. He'd like to be simi-
larly involved with Detroit's JCCs.
"I want to get involved with the `J'
here. I'd like to help out in any kind
of youth sports programs, not limited
to soccer, although that's my specialty,
he said."
Shanker was a favorite among St.
Louis' Jewish soccer fans. The
Ambush held an annual "ICC
Night" when Shanker played there.
He says he hasn't received special
attention from Detroit's Jewish soc-
cer community, although that could
change if he enjoys a full, healthy
season this year.
The Rockers play home games at
Compuware Sports Arena in
Plymouth, as well as the Palace of
Auburn Hills.
