Third-seeded Brotherhood I upset the
top two seeds on the first Sunday of
the B'nai B'rith softball playoffs, and
wound up winning its first league
championship since 1993.
Brotherhood I defeated
Morgenthau I 19-6 and Bloch-
Brotherhood 19-17 on Aug. 27.
The fourth seed, Brotherhood III,
on Sept. 10 defeated top-seeded
Bloch-Brotherhood 12-10 to get into
the championship game on the same
morning.
In the championship, Brotherhood
I took a 7-4 lead with a five-run,
third-inning rally. Brotherhood III
came back to tie the score at 7-7 after
four innings, and went up 9-7 after
five.
But in the bottom of the sixth,
Brotherhood III broke the game open
with seven runs, featuring a two-out,
bases-loaded single by team manager
Gary Klinger, which provided the
winning runs.
A subsequent walk to Stuart
Nathan, a triple by Howard Ishbia
and a single by Mike Klinger put the
game away.
A 1-2-3 seventh inning gave
Brotherhood I the 14-9 victory.
During the regular season, the final
standings were: Bloch-Brotherhood 18-
2, Morgenthau 13-7, Brotherhood I
13-7, Brotherhood III 11-7,
Brotherhood II 10-9, Pisgah 7-13,
Zager-Stone 5-15, Great Lakes
Region 1-18.
