Chuck Muer Restaurants wish all of our Jewish guests

Andrew J. Volstead was trying to spoil
everybody's fun, Capt. Shumway's was
a favorite watering spot.
Located on East Jefferson at the
Detroit-Grosse Pointe city limits,
Shumway's had a reputation for serv-
ing the very best Scotch and Canadian
whiskey,.
Rumor had it the captain cruised up
Fox Creek late at night in a high-pow-
ered boat and unloaded cases of con-
traband practically at his back door.
It was a well-known fact that the
good captain would not tolerate bath-
tub booze in his establishment ... It
did not measure up to the discriminat-
ing tastes of his customers.
"Cap" (as he was known) had made
many friends when he was running
legitimate saloons at the foot of
Woodward and the old Electric Park.
By popular demand "Cap" was soon
selling food as well as liquor in Grosse
Pointe ... When prohibition was
repealed he got one of the first licenses
in the state ... and business went on
uninterruptedly ... and legitimately.
ONE OF DETROIT'S characters,
Pete Driscoll, continued in business at
the same old stand ... Ten Mile Road
and East Jefferson, in St. Clair Shores.
The same old stand in this case was
a 110-year-old building that Pete
made into a restaurant called Driscoll's
... The porch sagged and the floor
dipped gracefully here and there ...
But out of its kitchen came the most
eye-popping steaks in the Midwest.
There were a few ground rules to be
learned before venturing into this
creaking establishment.
First, it was well to remember that
Pete's public relations policy was
roughly, "The public be damned!" ...
A sign over the bar proclaimed that
"We are not recommended by Duncan
Hines" ... But it was not true that Pete
threw Duncan out of the door when
he came around to sign him up!
State law required that prices be
posted for all to see ... Most places
complied with this by printing a menu
... Not Pete.
There were no menus at Driscoll's ...
Grudgingly, Pete nailed a couple of
blackboards to his walls ... and on
these could be found a list of dinners
with prices.
The menu list was small but select ...
It included steaks whitefish, frog's legs,
chicken, lobster and lamb chops ... "If
you want anything else, go to a drive-
in," said Pete ... And he meant it.
