The meeting was held in West Bloomfield at the
Jewish Community Center's Handlen2an Hall
and Auditorium. It was renovated through
a donation from Ilandleman, a former Butzel
Award winner, and his late wife, Marion.

Aronson also thanked Slatkin, whose
three-year term ended as Foundation
president.
"Whenever I have asked you to take
that flag, you have done so," Aronson
said, "often overcoming great odds and
suffering great casualties in the process.
I stand here tonight to tell you that I
know that your greatest wish as presi-
dent was to make a difference in the
lives of our people. We are here to tell
you that you have done that, and I
know that you will continue to do so."
Federation President Penny
Blumenstein said Slatkin "came to the
United Foundation with a lot of good
skills, but he brought something more
the quality of heart that is so vital
to being a Jewish leader."
Slatkin told the crowd of 350 what
he learned during his term. "It took
three years to reconfirm to me what I
really always knew, which is at the end
of the day, it's not about bricks and
mortar, or grants and dollars, it's about
how these investments help our people
live better lives as Jews. To all of you, I
say from the bottom of my heart:
Thanks for the fabulous ride."
Hauser, the new Foundation presi-
dent, said, "What a wonderful time it
is ro take the helm of the Foundation.

We think Jewish thoughts, we dream
Jewish dreams. Working together, we'll
realize those dreams."
Also on this evening, Hugh and
Carolyn Greenberg of Franklin
received Federation's Fred M. Butzel
Memorial Award for Distinguished
Community Service.
"Many decisions are made in the
course of any given year in the
Federation," said Bloomfield Hills Dr.
Conrad Giles, newly elected vice chair-
man of United Jewish Communities,
the national federated umbrella agency,
while introducing the couple. "No
decision was ever wiser than the one
that nominated Carolyn and Hugh
Greenberg for the Butzel Award."
Carolyn said, "I feel it's a cliche to say
that we have received much more than
we gave, but it's true. The friendships
built through community involvement
are truly precious to us. There's no exag-
geration to say that life has had a richer
texture, and being a part of the Jewish
world has nourished our soul."
Hugh said, "We have long been
blessed by having been able to support
causes and projects that have been
important to us and to see up close
the results of our efforts. That has
given us great satisfaction." 7
