I

t was a warm and fuzzy
Tuesday night at the combined
annual meeting for Detroit
Jewry's umbrella federated
organizations: the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit and its real
estate/banking arm, the United Jewish
Foundation.
The evening marked the presenta-
tion of the Jewish community's highest
award to a long-serving couple,
Carolyn and Hugh Greenberg; the
passing of UJF's presidential gavel
from Robert Slatkin to Mark R.
Hauser; and the delivery of a commu-
nal report card.
As Federation CEO Robert Aronson
reflected on another successful year, he
referred to the many programs serving
Jews in Detroit. "It has been a year of

engaging with the synagogue commu-
nity in a comprehensive new effort to
better educate our children while, at
the same time, seeing to it that our
day schools and social-service agencies
have the resources they need to serve
all our people," he said.
"To all of you this evening involved
with our synagogues and our agen-
cies," he said, "I have a very simple
message: The Federation is there for
you. I think you know that now."
Aronson added:
"And I say to all of you, on the eve
of the new year, that your involvement
and your giving in this community is
not a slogan. It is a sacred commitment
upon which our community — and
the greater Jewish people — have the
right to depend. It is what we should
be about at Federation. It is a powerful
idea to which we will need to re-dedi-
cate ourselves in the coming year."
