MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

As I begin my tenure as president of Kodima, I look forward to two years of exciting
challenges and growth.
I have been involved with Kadima for more than ten years, gaining experience in
many areas of the agency's work. As a member of the board for eight years, six of
those as a vice-president, I have seen tremendous changes. However, one thing has
remained constant the quality services and programs Kodima offers to its clients and
their families. Above all else, Kadima cannot lose sight of its mission and must never
compromise its ongoing pursuit for excellence on behalf of the community we serve.
One poignant story comes to mind as I consider why I am so dedicated to Kodima.
Several years ago, a father was desperately struggling with his troubled 20 year old
son who was acting out and behaving strangely Try as the father would, he could not
persuade the young man to seek help, or treatment, nor would the authorities within the
mental health system become involved. So the young man continued to lead a tortured
existence while his whole family tried to cope with the situation. Finally, the father called
Kadima. Janette, executive director, and Geta, clinical director, spent hours talking with
him on the telephone, advising him of how to seek help through the mental health deliv-
ery system and the courts. Although the son continued to resist treatment, the father
attended Kodima's parent support group, where he benefited from the experiences of
others and professional guidance from Kadima staff.
Last week, the father stopped by the office to thank the staff in person. He told them
that with Kadima's assistance, he finally had the courage to ad and relayed this story.

The father had petitioned the court for an involuntary hos-
pitalization for his son. When the father appeared in court to
lead his case, he carried into the courtroom the door from his
some that his son had destroyed. Painted all over the door
were the demons which haunted his son every day. Only in this
way could the father ever have a chance of making the judge
understand his dilemma. And so finally, the young man is
beginning to get the help he needs, and a father who believed
he was on the verge of losing his son, once again has a reason to hope. The father said,
"I can't imagine where my son and I would be today if it hadn't been for Kadima's help."
This is just one example of the dedication of the Kodima staff and how the agency
responds wherever and whenever there is a need. In this case Kodima clearly was able
to make a significant difference, even though the young man has never officially been
part of the Kadima program. Please remember that with your help, on a daily basis
Kadima helps to substantially improve the lives of our clients and their families, which is
really what Kodima is all about.
I am proud to assume the leadership of Kadima at such an exciting time in our his-
tory. All of us at Kadima know that what we are and can become is only possible
because of your ongoing support.
Shona tova,
Richard Zussman, President

KADIMA CLIENTS ENJOY
FRESH AIR SOCIETY' NANCY
AND STEPHEN GRAND RESORT

"Laughing Always Matters", an evening of celebration and laugh-
ter is planned for Tuesday, October 17, 2000 at Detroit Opera House
featuring David Brenner.
David Brenner, 54, was interrupted a record 16 times with
applause when he performed on Letterman last year. A king of the
comedy mountain in the early 90's, he had to cut bock in his
performance schedule as he devoted his energies and commitment
to a contentious court battle for custody of his oldest son. With
that now behind him, he is back to entertain us with his clever, witty,
warm humor.
Brenner credits his success to growing up in touch, poor sections of
south and west Philadelphia. "I was in
hundreds of street fights," recalls Brenner,
who always tried to deflect anti-Semetic
violence with jokes.
The evening's program will also
include a short opening performance by
Amazin' Blue, a choral group from the
University of Michigan and a video
about Kodima, generously produced
and underwritten by Big Productions.
The Young Adult pre-glow is spon-
sored by Handleman Company and Lois
and Milton Zussman. A generous anonymous donor has underwrit-
ten the afterglow, and favors were donated by Whole Foods. Kodima
relies on the success of the annual benefit for 70% of the agency's
operating budget. "Our mission is to help men and women with psy-
chiatric disabilities cope with their illness and build new lives for them-
selves," says Executive DirectorJanette Shallal. "One out of five fami-
lies is impacted by mental illness. These people and their families need
not struggle alone. Kodima is here to help."
airpersons of the event are Karen Amber and Merle Schwartz.
According to Merle, "The benefit serves 2 purposes raising need-
ed dollars and raising awareness about mental illness in the commu-
nity. Every dollar counts. Kodima helps clients in so many ways. Our
whole community should be proud to have this agency in our Jewish
community. There is not another agency like this in the country."
Success would not be possible without the dedication and involve-
ment of many volunteers. Other leadership include Host Committee
Chairpersons Evelyn Goodman and Phyllis Levitt, Parlor Event
Chairpersons Lorraine and Jerome Bookstein, and Barbara and
Michael Kratchman, Parlor Hosts Hilary and Selwyn Isakow, Ad
Journal Chairpersons Shirleyanne Schlang and Millie Sloan, and
Young Adult Committee Chairperson Jeffrey Sobel and Associate
Chairperson Lisa Bronstein. Volunteers include the Benefit Committee,
Host Committee, Ad Joumal Committee, Young Adult Committee and
clerical volunteers.

As in years past,
Kadima clients again
enjoyed 5 wonderful
days at Fresh Air Society's
Nancy and Stephen
Grand Resort at Mullett
Lake in upper lower
Michigan, generously
underwritten by Nancy
and Stephen Grand.
Activities included
swimming, crafts directed
by Board member
Barbara Eisenberg and
her husband Gary
Eisenberg, cookouts, day
trips, boating and most
importantly just hanging
out. For many of the 25
clients who participated,
this is their only opportuni-
ty for a vacation. Joy was
evident on faxes all week
long. Letters of thanks
were written to the
Grands, the sample here
is by Gary Litwin.
