Hot Commodity

In his 37 years of serving the
Downtown Synagogue in Detroit,
Rabbi Noah Gamze can only remem-
ber one or nvo problems — until
Sept. 14.
The rabbi went out to put quarters
in the parking meter on Griswold
Street in front of the synagogue
around 3:30 in the afternoon. When
he returned after 4 p.m., he found his
white 1990 Buick Century Limited
had vanished from the parking space.
"I had the keys in my pocket," the
rabbi said, "but in my haste, I didn't
lock the car. I never dreamed anyone
would steal a 10-year-old car."
Police and friends tell him that's not
the case.
No trace of the car has turned up
and the rabbi is driving a rented vehi-
cle, "partially the courtesy of AAA"
insurance company.
"I guess now, after the High
Holidays, I'm going to have to start
looking for a new car," Rabbi Gamze
said.

Job Begets Job

In addition to the memorable experi-
ence and continuing relationships Julie
Schwartz made as a camp counselor
this summer, her work also gained her
a school-year job.
After reading the story of Schwartz's
special involvement with campers in the
Jewish Community Center Special
Needs Day Camp Inclusion Program
("Side By Side" Aug. 25, page 43), Aviva
Panush decided Schwartz would make a
"wonderful addition" to the Kehillat
Israel synagogue-based school she directs.
"I read the story and Julie seemed
like a wonderful individual who had
both the qualities and talent," Panush
said. And because Schwartz, a junior
at Michigan State University in East
Lansing, lives near the Lansing-based
Reconstructionist synagogue, it made
for an even better match.
"The school is small, but there is a
diverse population, including a few
kids with special needs," said
Schwartz, who already is in place at
her new job.
