Family, Friends And Business
Hugh is president of Detroit Gauge
and Tool Company, a world leader in
the design and building of aircraft
engine tooling. Carolyn was a former
social studies teacher.
The couple has three married chil-
dren, two active in Detroit's
Federation, and six grandchildren,
with one more on the way. They are
lifelong members of Temple Beth El.
Their hobbies include dancing, golf,
tennis and tending their garden. They
also love to collect art — the showcase in
their living room displays the
Greenbergs' collection of Peking Imperial
glass from the 16th and 17th centuries.
Robert Aronson, Federation chief
executive officer, and Hugh are golf
buddies who also work out problems
while working on their putting.
"He's got a great sense of humor,"
Aronson said. "We're involved in
serious issues, but we never take
each other too seriously. He's just a
very dedicated, focused person, and
I get a kick out of him."
The Greenbergs know that their
communal work is not done.
"We've worked for a long time
and been involved for our whole •
married life, but if we can look at
the former Butzel winners, we know
that this is not the end of our
careers," Carolyn said. "As long as
we can, we hope to keep doing
things for the community." ❑

More than one century ago Alfred Nobel added a bequest to his will that supports
an annual event bearing his name. What he founded in order to award human
ingenuity and research is a touchstone for civilization and progress. And many
Jews have joined history's Nobel Laureates with pride and distinction.

"Jews are unique in that for eighteen-hundred years they have had no country...and
have, whenever there was any pretense of equality of opportunity for them, forged
their way ahead into positions of prominence, influence and power in business,
professions, in philosophy, in art, in literature and in government."
