Highly opinionated, Shay wasted no
time in showing his Zionism and
what he thought of the British.
"The British are so stupid," he said.
"In 1953, when the whole world knew
the Germans had counterfeited British
pounds, they were still using them."
At one time Shay's collection num-
bered 14,000 artifacts, kept in his 14-

The fifth floor of the Simon
Wiesenthal Museum in Los Angeles,
which stores Holocaust artifacts, is
mostly his collection. Every Holocaust
museum in the world has at least a
few items from his collection, he said.
Shay said he used to give about 450
lectures a year. He's slowed down
since the 1977 car accident that killed
his first wife and left him nearly para-
lyzed. He's also had numerous heart-
bypass operations. Now he's concen-
trating on publishing more than 400
articles, and writing several books on
his collection.
His career as a custom tailor in
Philadelphia, with clientele "all the
way to Washington, D.C.," allowed
him to give thousands of lectures for
free.
"To me, to accept money for a
speech on the Holocaust is like mak-
ing money out of the Six Million
dead, and I couldn't do it," Shay said.
"When I speak to the Wiesenthal
Center, they send me airline tickets,
so I am happy."
