"As hard as it is to believe today, and
the way the world is now and the status
of Jews today, Jewish doctors could not
get on the staff of hospitals," he said.
"The reason why it was built is no
longer necessary, and from that point of
view, it's not such a terrible tragedy, but
it's sad the hospital has to close."
They both agree that times have
changed for Jews in America, but peo-
ple should always remember that
things were different in the past.
"When I was a youngster, I lived in
a totally non-Jewish neighborhood in
the mid-'30s, when Father Coughlin,
Charles Lindberg, the German
American Bund said terrible anti-
,
Semitic things with impunity;
said. "I was picked on as a kid because
I was a Jew."
He continued, "It's hard for us to
think about it now, but anti-Semitism
was perfectly legitimate, and we as a
Jewish community were so impotent.
We were scared.
Since the Holocaust, with the estab-
lishment of Israel and the growth of
Jewish federations, Hugh said, "Let's face
it, you can't screw with Jews anymore."

History And Religion

Last winter, when the Greenbergs
were invited to a friend's home in
Boston, they met Nobel Prize winner
Elie Wiesel.
When someone asked Wiesel what
was important to teach in Jewish edu-
cation, they say Wiesel replied, "Not
religion; you have to teach the Jewish
people history.
Hugh agrees. "The history of the
Jews and the accomplishments they've
made throughout history is astound-
ing, and that's the message we have to
leave our children," he said.
"We are a great people and have a
great tradition, and it doesn't neces-
sarily link to religion. My grandfa-
ther was very, very Jewish in every
single way, but he wasn't very reli-
gious, and my father was the same
way, and so am I," Hugh said. "It'S
not a requirement to be a devout
supporter of your people. History is
what it's all about."
"Both of us come from Reform back-
grounds," Carolyn said. "There is so
much feeling that you have to be
halachically involved, and yet I think so
much of the leadership has come from
the Reform movement. I think some-
times there's a feeling today that you're
not respected enough if you're not a
traditionalist. I think that the commit-
ment doesn't have to be necessarily a
religious one. You can be a secularist
