The owners, as example, were told
of having to wait two weeks for instal-
lation of two ducts .... Instead, they
bought sheet metal, made their own
and did the installing themselves ...
This willingness to work hard and
apparent very talented ingenuity is
playing a big part in the success Shiro
is now enjoying.
The mansion is indeed a place to
admire ... With its classic blend of
New England and Georgian-style pro-
portions, two fieldstone chimneys,
leaded-glass windows, original tile, oak
flooring, huge original chandelier, etc.
... The cocktail lounge bar with its five
stools and two tall tables, off Shiro's
well-appointed sushi bar sector, used
to be the home's library ... with all
original mahogany paneling, some of
which was used to make the bar.
The mansion had been built on the
original homestead of the Thornton
family into which the late Charles
Rogers had married ... He and his father
are credited with inventing condensed
milk and selling it to Pet Milk Co.
Legend has it that the grand stair-
case with its beautiful cherry wood
banisters, that now leads to many din-
ing rooms, was built for the daughter
Charles and Harriet Rogers never had
... having four sons instead ... When a
granddaughter was born, he couldn't
wait for the day she would come down
the staircase on his arm ... It never
happened, though ... She eloped.
Two Tatami rooms, with rice-paper
slotted doors entering each one, seat
eight people at low, slightly higher than
the floor, tables atop a heavy straw mat,
the traditional Japanese flooring, and
cushioned seats with backs ... A third
Tatami room has a low table for 12,
fireplace, large TV and karaoke
machine ... There are always two per-
sons in each room, to serve and assist ...
All three rooms also can be opened into
one striking private room.
The dining rooms throughout Shiro
are beautiful with their white linen
tablecloths, burgundy linen napkins
and white-covered chairs ... A small
room has a wicker look ... with wicker
tables and armchairs.
Behind the Shiro sushi bar, Chef
Andrew Lim brings vast experience from
the Sushi Club for members only in
Seoul, Korea ... Mark Kim, ch ef partie,
comes from the five-star Novatel French
hotel in the Japanese sector of Korea.
In the kitchen, along with about
nine other chefs, Hirofumi Taira, chef
du cuisine, plied his trade at the fine
Forusat Japanese Restaurant in the
Tokyo suburb of Shinjuku.
