MARK MIETKIEWICZ

Special to the Jewish News

T

his month, the entire world
is watching Sydney,
Australia, as elite athletes
meet to compete in the
27th Olympiad. Even if you didn't
decide to mortgage your home for
tickets to the Games, you can travel to
the Olympics via the Internet at a
fraction of the cost.
This year's 40-strong delegation
from Israel is far different from the
one Israel sent in 1952 when it first
competed in Helsinki. Then, the most
notable achievement was by Yoav
Ra'anan, who took ninth place in
springboard diving. Over the next
four decades, participating was Israel's
main objective. Now, thanks to supe-
rior training, coaching and the exper-
tise of immigrants from the former
Soviet Union, Israel is hoping to bring
home its first gold medal. For more,
check out Israel's Ministry of Foreign
Affair's Olympic page at:
hq50).
The Olympic Committee of Israel
has put together a superb site
(olympic.achla.co.il/) . Although there
are a couple of pages in English giving
an overview of the Committee's work,
the site really excels in Hebrew.
There's a summary of how Israel has
fared at the Olympics over the years, a
list of every athlete who has competed
and a timetable of this year's competi-
tions. For more about this year's ath-
letes in English, check out Israel's
Olympic Hopes at:
(israeliculture.about.com/culture/isra
eliculture/library/weekly/aa073100a.
htm)
You'll find a list of Jewish competi-
tors from the rest of the world at
Jewishsport.com at:
letes.html).
As for the official site of the Sydney
2000 Olympic Games, the informa-

Mark Mietkiewicz is a Toronto-based
television producer who writes, lectures
and teaches about the Jewish Internet.

tion about Israel is limited to:
(olympics.com/engcountries/ISR/spo
rt /index.html).
Aside from learning that "Israel is a
land of contrasts and splendors," there
is an overview of the Olympic move-
ment in the country. The interesting
feature of the site, however, is that it
allows you to send e-mail to an athlete
or team in Sydney at:
pose/index.html).
For daily progress in English about
Israel's Olympic team, check out the
Jerusalem Post site (www.jpost.com )
and the English-language edition of
Hdaretz (www.haaretzdaily.com ).

Sydney's Jews

Sydney's Jewish community has rolled
out the red carpet for spectators fortu-
nate enough to make the trek to the
Games (www.join.org.au/sojoc/) .
Families throughout Sydney have vol-
unteered to open their homes to visi-
tors who require Shabbat hospitality.
Special events being held this month
include the establishment of a perma-
nent memorial to the Israeli athletes
killed at the Munich Olympics (1972),
Jewish walking tours of Sydney and spe-
cial Olympic celebrations.
After the Games end, Sydney will
have a couple of weeks to catch its
breath before it welcomes its next set
of visitors. On Oct. 18, Australia hosts
the Paralympics, the elite competition
for the world's top athletes with a dis-
ability. Check out its site at:
(olympics.com/eng/paralympics/
index.html). Israel is a veteran partici-
pant of these Games. In fact, Tel Aviv
hosted the 3rd Paralympic Games
back in 1968. See:
(paralympic.org/sports/results/para-
lympics/index.htm)
How about the Summer Olympics
in Israel? Three architectural students
from Tel Aviv University proposed
that their city consider hosting the
2012 Olympic Games. Their idea was
championed by Tel Aviv Mayor Ron
Huldai and ridiculed by practically
everyone else. See Hdaretz Web site:
