Debra Messing and her new husband,
actor/screenwriter Daniel Zelman.

Dramatic Arts and at Cambridge and
Oxford universities.
Her graduation into the bia time of
prime time was as the distaff b side of
Fox-TV's Ned 6 Stacey. She then regis-
tered strongly in a recurring role on
NYPD Blue, fleshing out a skel character
as Donna Abandando's scheming sister,
Dana. On Seinfeld, she played Jerry's
ideal but illusive love, Beth Lookner.
Her film credits include the rabid
news reporter in Woody Allen's
Celebrity and Keanu Reeve's wife in A
Walk in the Clouds. On stage, she
starred with Maria Tucci in the
acclaimed two-woman production of
Donald Margulies' Pulitzer Prize-con-
tender Collected Stories.
In the scheme of things, Messing
hasn't abandoned her attraction to the
role of the "good girl with a heart of
tarnished gold." Last season, she por-
trayed the morally murky Mary
Magdalene in the mini-series Jesus.
As someone raised Jewish, she says
she was scared about that role. "I was
frightened coming into" the telefilm,
fearing "that somehow I would be
missing something, that I wouldn't be
able to bring something to the story
that perhaps another actress with a dif-
ferent upbringing could.
Her fears were allayed, she says, when
she realized that all she could do was
play the part "human, real." Which are
exactly the virtues she brings to the
vexed Grace Adler and why Messing
isn't messing with the comedic mix that
earned her the Emmv nomination
and critical acclaim — for her interior
designer with an exterior life decorated
in indecisiveness. ❑

Will 6 Grace airs 9-9:30 p. m .
Thursdays on NBC.
