"In Life, There Are No Exceptions"
Open To The Public
eth
Cemetery will be
illi the setting for a community
memorial service 1 p.m. Sunday,
Sept. 24, sponsored by the Jewish
Genealogical Society of Michigan.
Marc Manson of Farmington Hills
is president of JGSM.
The event will include a service
led by Rabbi Steven Weiss of
Congregation Shaarey Zedek, a
ceremony by the Department of
Michigan Jewish War Veterans of
the United States of America, a
talk on the history of the cemetery
and the GM plant area by Milton
Marwil of West Bloomfield, a can-
dle-lighting service for relatives of
those buried there, the dedication
of a tree and informal tours of the
cemetery.
Stones will be available to place
on gravesites, and booklets will be
distributed giving the names of
people buried at Beth Olem, a his-
tory of the cemetery, Jewish ceme-
tery etiquette and instructions for
reading Hebrew tombstones.
Ira Kaufman Chapel in
Southfield is providing chairs and
kippot (head coverings) for the
expected 300 visitors.
"We've been planning a service
like this for about 10 years," said
Pam Gordon, event coordinator and
a past president of the JGSM.
"We're seeking an awareness of Beth
Olem by the general Jewish commu-
nity. We feel as many Jews as possi-
ble should see it and learn about it."
General Motors has provided a
grant of $5,000 for the event,
which the society will use to char-
ter buses to the cemetery. They
will leave at noon from
Congregation Shaarey Zedek's
parking lot in Southfield. Visitors
to Beth Olem also are asked to
come to Shaarey Zedek and share
rides with others.
To get to Beth Olem, take the
Lodge Freeway south. Exit at
Grand Boulevard and turn left
(east). Continue east until the road
ends at the GM plant. Bear right
on the service drive, turn left at the
first entrance to the plant. Check
in at the guardhouse, then go to
the far left and follow signs to the
cemetery. Vehicles will be directed
to parking areas. For information,
call Pam Gordon at (248) 738-

ety's Web site, www.jgsmi.org .

"I can tell you from past experience, I have lived in
another retirement community and nothing can
compare with the life I am living now at The Heritage.
I am totally delighted with the attentive
management and the entire staff at
The Heritage. It is beautiful, well built and
the people are warm and friendly."
