Cohn-Haddow
Holds Lectures

Marriage strategies in North African
Jewish families and the romanticiz-
ing of the old Jewish quarters of
Paris and Rome will be the focus of
two free lectures. Both are presented
under the auspices of the Cohn-
Haddow Center of Judaic Studies at
Wayne State University in Detroit.
At 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24, at
Temple Emanu-El, scholar Joelle
Bahloul, associate professor of
anthropology and Jewish studies at
Indiana University, will discuss
"Espousing French Culture: The
Challenge of Assimilation Among
North African Jewish Women in
Contemporary France." This pro-
gram, the George M. and Pearl A.
Zeltzer Lecture on Women and
Judaism, is cosponsored with Temple
Emanu-El. It will be followed by a
reception.
Earlier the same day, at 3 p.m., is
the lecture, "Romancing the Stones:
Rediscovering Jewish Identity in the
Old Jewish Quarters of Paris and
Rome." It will take place in the
Polish Room of Manoogian Hall, on
the Wayne State campus. This lec-
ture is cosponsored by the WSU
Department of Anthropology.
Both lectures are open to the pub-
