ELISSA D. BERG Special to the Jewish News 0 n a recent Wednesday after- noon, both driveways to Adat Shalom Synagogue were being repaved. It was almost impossible to enter the proper- ty. Someone had apparently forgotten that at 7 p.m. we were scheduled to do "PJs and Stories." Every Wednesday evening during the summer, a member of our profes- sional staff comes to the synagogue library to read a Jewish story to our preschoolers in their pajamas. There is a craft, sometimes a song, a snack and the opportunity for kids and their par- ents to shmooze. Adat Shalom has a "PJs and Stories" community: parents and children who are always there. At 5 p.m. that evening, my phone calls began. Everyone who had been to "PJs" this summer was called with specific directions as to where on the lawn they might turn in to rejoin the road lead- ing to the school wing. My phone calls were well received but one particular conversation stands out. I called a household with four (really!) preschoolers. Mom answered, "Oh, thanks for calling. We would love to join you tonight but the boys did not behave this afternoon and I told them if they did not take their To FLOWER ON PAGE 56 You'd probably start with a strong college prep curriculum.
