Voices In Jewish Education

ROBERT A.
SKLAR

Editor

he center of the universe for chil-
dren when it comes to Jewish
learning is — surprise! — at
home, not at religious school.
Sure, kids can learn at, and get excited
about, their Jewish day, congregational or
supplementary school, or summer camp.
That's all well and good — and as it
should be.

But unless that newfound knowledge
translates into a passion for observing Shabbat, celebrating the
holidays and sharing Jewish values at home, the Jewish identi ty
that kids gain in reigious school or summer camp is bound to
wilt under the hot lights of secular life.
The idea is that kids who grow up in a Jewishly involved
family are more apt to continue their Jewish education beyond
bar or bat mitzvah, and more apt to become lifelong Jewish
learners.

Aptly, the theme of today's back-to-school special supple-
ment, Voices In Jewish Education, is "A Lifetime Of Jewish
Learning."

Our special report begins on page 33. It was edited by Story
Development Editor Keri Guten Cohen, Associate Editor Alan
Hitsky and Copy Editor Esther Allweiss Tschirhart. Staff
Writer Diana Lieberman, Student Intern Leslie Zack, Staff
Photographer Krista Husa and Editorial Assistant Seymour
Manello were contributors, as were a host of local advocates of
lifelong Jewish learning. Our editorial comment is on page 63.
A special commentary is on page 66.
Dr. Lynda Giles' message in the newly released Federation's
Alliance for Jewish Education study, "Strategic Vision," insightful-
ly sets the stage for what we've tried to hammer on in Voices II.
"Today's Jewish family needs everything this community
can offer and things we're still dreaming about. The big ques-
tion is, 'Can we re-engineer the Jewish community so that it is
compelling for the next generation?' We want a place in which
no matter where you are on your Jewish journey, there is an
opportunity to become engaged with this community."
