Cancer Foundation, received $15 mil-
lion and changed its name to the
Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer
Institute.
The complaint alleges that at all
times, Honigman, Miller, "through one
or more of its members or partners,
was acting as attorney for
Comprehensive Cancer Center of
Metropolitan Detroit Inc., for the
Michigan Cancer Foundation both
before and after the
merger and for the
Barbara Ann Karmanos
Cancer Institute.
The complaint then
states the law firm was
"likely the attorney for
the entity and/or person
who provided the $15
million contribution as
well as [for] the Detroit
Medical Center (DMC),
placing them in a con-
flict-of-interest position
by representing both par-
ties to the merger and
likely all parties at the
time ()leach name
change.
Meyer Prentis
Honigman, Miller has
represented Compuware
Corp. of Farmington Hills and its chief
executive officer, Peter Karmanos. The
Institute is named after Karmanos'
wife, Barbara, who died of breast can-
cer in 1989. The institute is affiliated
with both the DMC and the WSU
School of Medicine.
Compuware has benefited from its
association with the Karmanos-affiliat-
ed DMC. According to published

served as a regent of the General
Motors Institute.
He was a founder and first secre-
tary-treasurer of the United
Foundation of Greater Detroit (now
known as the United Way for
Southeastern Michigan), serving as
chairman of its goals and allocations
committee.
Prentis also served 25 years as
president of the Citizens Research
Council of Michigan.
But Prentis also was active in
Detroit's Jewish communal life. He
was an early leader in the Jewish
Welfare Federation and served as
trustee of Temple Beth El.
The Wayne State University
School of Business Administration
also was created largely through his

reports, the firm has a 10-year, $1-bil-
lion computer operations contract with
the DMC.
The lawsuit alleges that on the
date of the 1994 merger, "a member
or members" of Honigman, Miller
sat on the board of the Michigan
Cancer Foundation and
Comprehensive Cancer Center of
Metropolitan Detroit Inc. The suit
identifies Alan E. Schwartz, a part-
ner in the law firm,
as being chairman of
Comprehensive
Cancer Center of
Metropolitan
Detroit Inc.
Contacted for corn-
ment on Sept. 12, Joel
Adelman, the chief
executive officer of
Honigman, said, "We
have reviewed this
matter in the office
and there is no ques-
tion that both our
client, the Karmanos
Institute, and our law
firm have conducted
themselves in a man-
ner which is totally
appropriate. The alle-
gations are totally without merit."
Dr. William P. Peters, president,
director and CEO of the Karmanos
Institute, speaking through spokesper-
son Yvette Monet, declined comment
on the lawsuit.
Silverman said any monies the
Prentis Foundation might receive
from the lawsuit would be put to
charitable use.

In New York, Prentis is credited
with playing a major role in the
founding of the Albert Einstein
College of Medicine at Yeshiva
University
Prentis died of cancer in July 1970
at the age of 84. His wife, Anna, and
the couple's four daughters survived
him: Mrs. Lawrence Lande, Mrs.
Lester Morris, Mrs. Beverly Straus
and Mrs. Marvin Frenkel. He also
left nine grandchildren. Mrs. Lande,
who was married to the noted
Canadian author, poet and biblio-
phile, has since died.
