I

t is a myth that only men have
heart attacks. Heart disease is the
leading cause of death among
women past menopause and kills
more women than all cancers com-
bined. By the age of 65, a woman's risk
is almost the same as a man's.
Medical experts at William
Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak
presented a frank picture of specific
health conditions in a seminar Aug.
29 entitled "Focus on Heart Disease
in Women."
The morning event took place in
the lecture room at the Beaumont
Heart Center. All 90 seats were occu-
pied — almost entirely by women.
To carry out a goal of addressing
the needs of Jewish women and girls,
The Jewish Women's Foundation
UWF) of Metropolitan Detroit co-
sponsored the seminar with the
Beaumont Women's Cardiovascular
Research Institute.
Participants learned that 10 times
more women will die this year from
heart and blood vessel disease than
breast cancer and twice as many women
as men die after bypass surgery. What's
more, women experience higher death
rates and complications following a
heart attack than men. Women also are
more likely to have delays in treatment
for heart attack.

JWF is a year-old nonprofit orga-
nization established by the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit
and United Jewish Foundation of
Metropolitan Detroit.
It is a philanthropic organization
dedicated to empower women as fun-
ders, decision makers and agents for
positive change in the community.
Health issues are one priority.
"Studies show that women often
turn first to institutions affiliated with
their religious backgrounds for sup-
port," says Margot Halperin of
Bloomfield Hills, chairperson of the
JWF. "As such, we recognize the
unique role of women's funds associ-
ated with a religious and cultural
identity and believe that JWF leader-
ship and financial resources can make
a difference in the lives of Jewish
women and girls by expanding and
improving their opportunities.
"This was our first education pro-
gram," said Halperin. "Although we
planned the event together with the
hospital and the participants were the
guests of JWF, Beaumont completely
underwrote all costs."
Brenda Rosenberg of Bloomfield
Hills is chairperson of JWF's educa-
tion committee and one of JWF's
founding trustees. "I find it com-
pelling that I am participating in the
decision-making process of making
grants to projects that focus on Jewish
women's issues," she said.
