Supervision Question
At Grand Resort

What might have been the Jewish
Academy of Metropolitan Detroit's first
weekend retreat was cancelled because
of a lack of on-site kosher supervision
in the dining hall at Fresh Air Society's
Grand Resort at Mullett Lake.
Although Tamarack Camps in
Ortonville are under the supervision
of the Council of Orthodox Rabbis of
Greater Detroit (Vaad Harabonim),
the new family camp near Cheboygan
is not, according to Rabbi Joseph D.
Krupnik, kashrut supervisor of the
Vaad. The Vaad placed an ad in the
Jewish News on Aug. 4 (page 102),
making that clear after they received
numerous inquiries."

"The assumption
assumption that [this camp] is
an extension of our supervision at
Tamarack is where any problem
began," Rabbi Krupnik said.
Meanwhile, Harvey Finkelberg,
executive director of the Fresh Air
Society/Tamarack Camps, said his
agency "is committed to having a
mashgiach [kosher supervisor] on the
premises when a group requires it.
Our kitchen will be kosher."
Rabbi Krupnik of the Vaad says
Fresh Air "approached us many months
ago about being under our supervision.
Because of distance — four hours each
way — it's not feasible."
Finkelberg remains determined.
"We haven't had a group yet that
requested supervision (including
JAMD). We will work it out." He
cites the possibility of using the
mashgichim [observers] who have
worked at Tamarack Camps or are
working with the Metropolitan
Kashruth Council of Michigan.
"It would be magnificent if facilities
for schools and families have a kosher
and Shabbat-observant experience that
fits all levels of observance," said Rabbi
Lee Buckman, JAMD head of school.
