he tomatoes began
ripening in the Temple
Emanu-El garden early
this summer, and
enthusiastic gardeners of all ages
slopped through the mud to add
them to already-overflowing bas-
kets.
So far, the "Garden Chavurah,"
as the gardeners call themselves,
has contributed about 300 pounds
of produce to Oak Park-based Yad
Ezra kosher food pantry. In addi-
tion to tomatoes, the crops plant-
ed include cucumbers, eggplant,
pumpkins, beets, beans, herbs and
peppers — both sweet and hot —
and they're still coming.
Membership in the Garden
Chavurah, which is now in its sec-
ond year, is open to any member
of the Oak Park temple.
Along with contributions for
Yad Ezra, some of the produce
will be set aside for Temple
Emanu-El cooks to use in their
annual spaghetti dinner, sched-
uled for Sept. 20.
